Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, at Long Beach in CA. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young kid. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could follow her passion for theater and art during the day. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful instrument for social activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her university. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence of a particular member of the Jury. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Besides PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
